Why two websites give you two different birth charts
You enter the same birth date on two sites and get two different charts. That is not proof that one is fake. Almost every mismatch traces back to four choices, and you can check all of them yourself.
The planets agree; the settings do not
Here is the reassuring part. The raw positions of the Sun, Moon and planets are not in dispute. Nearly every serious astrology site, including this one, pulls them from the Swiss Ephemeris, a set of planetary tables built from NASA's own long-term models. Feed in a moment in time and you get positions accurate to a fraction of an arcsecond. Two sites using it will place Mars in the same spot in the real sky, every time.
So why do the charts look different? Because a birth chart is not just planetary positions. It is planetary positions passed through a series of human choices. Where do we start measuring the zodiac? How do we slice the sky into twelve houses? What exact second do we call the birth? What point on Earth do we call the birth place?
Change any one of those and the numbers shift. Change the first one and your Moon can land in a different nakshatra, the 27-fold division of the zodiac that Vedic astrology leans on most heavily. Change the second and a planet can jump from the tenth house to the ninth.
This is worth understanding for one plain reason. If you know which four settings matter, you stop wondering whether birth chart accuracy is a myth and start asking a better question: which settings was this chart built with, and are they stated anywhere?
Ayanamsa is the biggest single reason, and it comes from a wobble
Earth spins like a slightly tilted top. Its axis traces a slow circle in space, taking about 25,800 years to come back around. Astronomers call this precession. It moves the sky's reference points by roughly 50 arcseconds a year, which works out to about one degree every 72 years.
This creates a fork in the road. Western astrology usually measures the zodiac from the spring equinox, which drifts with the wobble. Vedic astrology measures from the fixed stars instead. The gap between the two starting points is called the ayanamsa, and today it is about 24 degrees. That is most of a whole sign, which is why a Western chart and a Vedic chart often disagree about your Sun sign.
The trouble is that astronomers and astrologers do not fully agree on where the sidereal zodiac begins. Lahiri, the standard used by the Indian government's calendar committee, is the most widely used in Vedic work. Raman sits roughly a degree away from it. Krishnamurti sits a few arcminutes off. Fagan-Bradley, common in Western sidereal circles, sits close to a degree in the other direction.
A degree sounds tiny. It is not, near a boundary. Nakshatras are 13 degrees 20 minutes wide, and each splits into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. If your Moon sits half a degree from an edge, an ayanamsa difference of one degree moves it into the next nakshatra entirely. Your whole reading changes, and neither site made an error.
Twelve houses, several ways to cut them
The houses are the twelve life areas laid over the chart: self, money, siblings, home, and so on. Every system agrees on the first house cusp, the ascendant, which is the exact point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. After that, the methods part ways.
Whole sign houses, the oldest approach and the default in most North Indian and South Indian charts, are simple. Whatever sign the ascendant falls in becomes the entire first house. The next sign is the whole second house. No planet can straddle a boundary, and the maths is clean.
Sripati, used in parts of India, splits the space between the ascendant and the midheaven, then divides it up. Placidus, the common Western default, cuts by time rather than space and can produce very lopsided houses at high latitudes. Equal house divides the circle into twelve exact thirty-degree slices from the ascendant.
Now picture a planet sitting at 27 degrees of a sign, near the end. Under whole sign it stays in one house. Under Placidus or Sripati it may have already crossed into the next. So one site tells you Saturn is in the seventh house of partnership and another puts it in the sixth house of work and health.
Both are computing correctly. They are answering slightly different questions. This is why a good chart tells you which house system it used, instead of quietly picking one for you.
Four minutes moves the ascendant a full degree
The sky turns 360 degrees in about 24 hours. That is 15 degrees an hour, or one degree every four minutes. So the ascendant, the fastest-moving point in your chart, shifts a full degree while you boil an egg.
Most people's recorded birth time is rounded. Someone glanced at a clock and wrote 7:15. The real moment might have been 7:11 or 7:19, and the clock itself may have been a few minutes off. A ten-minute uncertainty means your ascendant degree is uncertain by about two and a half degrees. If your ascendant happens to sit near the end of a sign, your entire chart can rotate by one house.
The Moon is slower but still matters. It covers roughly 13 degrees a day, about half a degree an hour. A fifteen-minute error moves it only about eight arcminutes, so your Moon nakshatra is usually safe. But padas are only 3 degrees 20 minutes wide, and the Moon crosses one in about six hours. Births near a pada edge are genuinely borderline.
The divisional charts are the least forgiving. The navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes, and higher divisions slice finer still. A few minutes of clock error can reshuffle them.
None of this is fixable by better software. It is a limit in the source data, and an honest chart should say so rather than present a rounded time as exact.
A city name is not a location
The fourth divergence hides in plain sight. You type a city, and the site converts it to a latitude, longitude and time offset. Those three numbers do real work, and different databases hold different values.
Cities are large. Greater Delhi stretches tens of kilometres east to west, and one degree of longitude equals four minutes of clock time. Two sites using different centre points for the same city can differ by a minute or more of local time, which is a quarter of a degree of ascendant. Latitude matters too, because it changes how steeply the zodiac rises and therefore the house cusps in every system except whole sign.
Time zones are worse, because they have a messy history. India settled on a single 5:30 offset, but Calcutta ran on its own local time of 5:53 and 20 seconds until 1948. During the Second World War, India ran clocks an hour ahead. American daylight saving rules varied by state, county and year, and Indiana was famously inconsistent for decades.
Good software checks the historical time zone database for the exact date. Weaker software applies today's offset to a birth in 1943 and lands a full hour out. An hour of error moves the ascendant about fifteen degrees, which is half a sign.
If you want to test this, compute your free Kundli with the birth place spelled out precisely, then compare it with an older chart and look for a clean one-hour shift. That signature is a time zone bug, not a difference of opinion.
How to compare two charts without guessing
Do it in order, because the checks get faster as you go.
First, look for a whole-sign shift of about 24 degrees. That means one chart is tropical and the other sidereal, so you are comparing Western and Vedic frameworks rather than two Vedic ones.
Second, look for a shift of a degree or less that only changes things near boundaries. That is an ayanamsa difference, usually Lahiri against Raman or Krishnamurti. Find the setting and match it.
Third, check whether the planets sit at identical degrees but in different houses. Then only the house system differs, and nothing about the sky is in question.
Fourth, check for a clean one-hour or half-hour offset in the ascendant of roughly fifteen or seven and a half degrees. That is a time zone problem.
One more thing catches people out. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, can be computed as mean positions using a smoothed average, or as true positions that include the Moon's small oscillations. The two can sit up to about one and a half degrees apart. Most Vedic practice uses mean nodes, but not all software does.
If the numbers still refuse to line up, the difference is probably interpretive rather than technical, and that is a conversation better had with a person. The eighteen guides here work from the same computed chart, so at least you are all reading the same sky.
What precision does and does not buy you
It would be dishonest to end without saying this. Computing a chart carefully makes it internally consistent and reproducible. It does not make astrology's predictive claims true.
Controlled studies have generally failed to find that astrologers can match charts to real people, or predict traits and events, better than chance. Where results looked promising, they mostly did not survive replication. That is the honest state of the evidence, and no amount of arcsecond precision changes it.
So why bother getting the maths right? Two reasons, both practical.
One, an inconsistent tool is useless even as a tool. If your ascendant changes every time you open a different site, you cannot track anything, compare readings or judge whether a framework is telling you something stable. Precision is what makes the system checkable instead of vague.
Two, the traditional claims deserve to be tested on their own terms. Classical texts make specific statements about specific degrees, nakshatras and house placements. You cannot evaluate a claim about the fourth pada of Ashwini if your software cannot reliably tell you whether the Moon was in it. Sloppy computation lets every claim off the hook, because there is always room to say the chart was wrong.
Treat a birth chart as a precise map of the sky at a particular moment, which it genuinely is, and as a symbolic tradition whose interpretive claims remain unproven. Both statements are true at once, and holding both is more useful than believing either one alone.
When two sites disagree about your chart, the sky is not the problem. Almost every mismatch comes from four choices: the ayanamsa that sets where the sidereal zodiac begins, the house system that slices the twelve life areas, the rounding in your recorded birth time, and the coordinates and historical time zone hiding behind the city name. Each one is checkable in a couple of minutes, and each one should be stated openly rather than chosen for you in silence. Get those four right and your chart becomes stable and reproducible, which is the most any calculation can honestly offer you.

Which ayanamsa should I use?
For Vedic work, Lahiri is the sensible default. It is the standard adopted by India's calendar committee, it is what most Indian astrologers use, and it is what most classical commentary published in the last century assumes. Raman and Krishnamurti have real followings and sit within about a degree of Lahiri, so they mostly matter for placements near a boundary. There is no experimental way to prove one correct, because the tradition does not agree on which fixed star marks the zodiac's start. The practical advice is to pick one, note it, and stay with it, since switching mid-stream makes your own records useless.
My birth certificate time and my mother's memory differ by twenty minutes. Which do I use?
Use the certificate as your working number, because it was written closer to the event, but treat it as approximate. Twenty minutes of uncertainty means your ascendant degree could be off by about five degrees. If your ascendant sits comfortably in the middle of a sign, most of your chart holds up fine. If it sits within five degrees of a sign boundary, treat house placements as provisional and be extra careful with divisional charts like the navamsa. Some astrologers offer birth time rectification, which adjusts the time to fit known life events. It can be internally clever, but it is unverifiable, so do not mistake a rectified time for a recorded one.
Why does my Vedic Sun sign differ from the Western one I grew up with?
Because of precession, the slow wobble of Earth's axis. Western astrology usually measures the zodiac from the moving spring equinox, while Vedic astrology measures from the fixed stars. Those starting points have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the past two thousand years. Since each sign is 30 degrees wide, that gap is enough to shift most people back one sign. Neither system is miscalculating. They simply anchor the circle in different places, and both are consistent within their own rules. Vedic astrology also leans much more on the Moon's nakshatra than on the Sun sign, so the label you grew up with matters less here anyway.
Does the exact hospital address matter, or is the city enough?
For most purposes the city is enough, but not always. One degree of longitude equals four minutes of clock time, and a large metro can span a third of a degree, which is about a minute and a half of ascendant movement. That is under half a degree, so it rarely changes a sign or a house. Latitude has a bigger effect on house cusps in time-based systems like Placidus, though whole sign houses are immune to it. Use a precise place name if you have one, and do not lose sleep over a few kilometres. Getting the historical time zone right matters far more than getting the street right.
