Planetary hours: the oldest scheduling system still in use
Every hour of every day belongs to a planet, in a sequence that has not changed in two thousand years. The surprise is the arithmetic: these hours stretch in summer and shrink in winter, because they are cut from actual daylight rather than from a clock.
An hour that grows in June and shrinks in December
Ask anyone how long an hour is and they will say sixty minutes. The planetary hour, called hora in Indian practice, ignores that. It takes the time between sunrise and sunset, divides it into twelve equal parts, and calls each part one hour. Night gets the same treatment: sunset to the next sunrise, divided by twelve.
Here is the arithmetic with real numbers. Say the Sun rises at 6:12 in the morning and sets at 6:48 in the evening. That is 12 hours and 36 minutes of daylight, or 756 minutes. Divide by twelve and each daytime hora runs 63 minutes. The night has 1440 minus 756, which is 684 minutes, so each night hora is 57 minutes.
Now move to a northern city in midsummer. Sunrise at 4:45, sunset at 9:20 in the evening, which is 16 hours 35 minutes, or 995 minutes of light. Each daytime hora is about 83 minutes. The night hours squeeze down to roughly 37 minutes each.
So two people using the same system on the same date can have hours of very different length, simply because they live at different latitudes. This is why a printed table from another city is close to useless. The only input that matters is your own sunrise and sunset, which depend on your latitude, longitude and the date. Everything else in the system is bookkeeping on top of those two moments.
Saturn goes first because it looks slowest
The order of the planets in this system is not random, and it is not the order of distance from the Sun as we now know it. It is called the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Then it repeats from Saturn again.
That sequence is a ranking by apparent speed against the stars, seen from Earth. Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to go once around the zodiac, so it crawls. Jupiter takes about 12 years. Mars takes close to two. The Sun takes a year, and Venus and Mercury stay near the Sun but move a little faster on average. The Moon is the sprinter, finishing a full circuit in about 27 and a third days.
So the list runs from the slowest visible body to the fastest. Ancient astronomers had no telescopes, but they had patient records, and this ranking is genuinely correct as a measure of geocentric motion. It is one of the parts of old astrology that rests on real observation.
What gets attached to each planet afterwards, though, is convention rather than observation. Mercury hours for messages and paperwork, Venus hours for money and beauty, Mars hours for hard physical pushes, Saturn hours for slow careful work. Those meanings come from long tradition and from the character each planet was given, not from anything measured. It is worth keeping the two layers apart in your mind: the speed ranking is astronomy, the job list is culture.
Twenty-four divided by seven is why Monday follows Sunday
This is the detail that convinces most sceptics that the system is at least clever. The first hora after sunrise belongs to the lord of the day. On Sunday it is the Sun. Then the hours run down the Chaldean order: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun again, and on it goes through the day and night.
After 24 hours you reach the next sunrise. But 24 is not a multiple of 7. Twenty-four is three sevens plus three, so the cycle lands three places further along the list. Count three steps on from the Sun: Venus, Mercury, Moon. The next day begins with a Moon hour, so the next day is Monday, the Moon's day.
Keep going. Three steps on from the Moon gives Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, so Tuesday belongs to Mars. Three on from Mars gives Sun, Venus, Mercury: Wednesday is Mercury's. Then Jupiter, then Venus, then Saturn. That is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and the fossil is still visible in French, where Tuesday is mardi for Mars and Wednesday is mercredi for Mercury. Hindi does the same with Mangalvar for Mars and Budhvar for Mercury.
So the week you use for meetings and payslips is the leftover of an hour-counting scheme. The names survived long after most people forgot the arithmetic that produced them. That does not prove the hours work as advertised, but it shows how deeply this scheme is buried in ordinary life.
Choghadiya cuts the same day into eight instead of twelve
In much of India the version people actually check is not hora but choghadiya. The idea is identical, the division is different. Daylight is split into eight parts rather than twelve, and so is the night. With our 756 minutes of daylight from earlier, each choghadiya lasts 94 and a half minutes.
Each slot has a name, and each name has a planet behind it. Amrit belongs to the Moon, Shubh to Jupiter, Labh to Mercury, Char to Venus, Rog to Mars, Kaal to Saturn and Udveg to the Sun. Three of those, Amrit, Shubh and Labh, are counted as good. Char is treated as neutral, or fine for travel. Rog, Kaal and Udveg are the ones people avoid. Eight slots share seven names, so the day's first name comes round again at the end, and each weekday starts at a different point in the repeating list.
This is why a family may delay leaving on a trip by half an hour, or push a shop opening to after a Kaal period. In practice choghadiya is the popular, simplified face of planetary hours, and hora is the finer cut used by astrologers.
One warning about apps and printed panchang tables. Some quietly assume fixed 90 minute blocks from a standard 6 a.m. sunrise. That is not the real system, and by December or June it can be off by twenty minutes or more. If the numbers do not change through the year, the calculation is wrong.
What the sky between late August and mid October actually gives you
Planetary hours repeat every week, so they say nothing about what is unusual in a given month. For that you need the real positions. Venus moves into Libra on 2 September, and traditional practice treats Venus hours as its favourite time for anything about agreements, money and appearance. Then Venus turns retrograde in Libra on 3 October, which means it begins to appear to move backwards against the stars, an effect of Earth and Venus changing relative position rather than any real reversal. Tradition reads that as a period to review Venus matters rather than launch them. Take that as convention, not as a forecast.
Mercury enters Virgo on 7 September and moves on to Libra on 26 September, and Mars enters Cancer on 18 September. The Sun enters sidereal Virgo on 17 September. The New Moon in Leo falls on 11 September, the Full Moon in Pisces on 26 September, and another New Moon, in Virgo, on 10 October. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a bit days across the whole stretch, sitting in Libra from 11 to 13 October.
There is also a plain physical change to plan around. Through September the days shorten across the northern hemisphere and lengthen in the south, so your daytime hora shrinks or grows week by week. Honest limits: good scheduling, unproven claims
Here is the part that most articles skip. There is no reliable evidence that planetary hours change how events turn out. Nobody has shown that contracts signed in a Mercury hora hold up better, or that trips begun in Kaal go wrong more often. The claims are old, widely shared and untested, and a few small studies of auspicious timing in general have found nothing. Treating them as proven would be dishonest.
What is solid is the astronomy underneath. Sunrise and sunset for your exact place and date can be computed precisely, and we do that from the Swiss Ephemeris. The speed ranking of the seven visible bodies is real. The division of daylight into twelve or eight parts is simple arithmetic anyone can check. So the framework is exact even though the meanings are traditional.
There is also a plain, non-mystical reason people find the system useful. It forces you to name a specific time for a specific task and then start. Most of us do not fail at work because the hour was wrong. We fail because we never decided when to begin. A Mercury hora that ends in 63 minutes is a deadline with a story attached, and deadlines do change behaviour.
So use it as a ritual for attention if you like it. Do not use it to decide anything medical, legal or financial, and do not let a Rog period stop you from doing something that needs doing today.
A first week with the system, done simply
Start with the two numbers that matter. Look up today's sunrise and sunset for your own city, not the nearest big one, because even a hundred kilometres shifts the timing by minutes. Subtract sunrise from sunset to get the length of daylight in minutes, then divide by twelve. That figure is your daytime hora for today. Do the same with the remaining minutes for the night, and you will usually find the two lengths differ by a fair amount.
Next, find the day's lord. Sunday is the Sun, Monday the Moon, Tuesday Mars, Wednesday Mercury, Thursday Jupiter, Friday Venus, Saturday Saturn. The first hora after sunrise belongs to that planet, and then you walk down the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, repeating.
Now pick one task and one planet, not five. If you have emails and forms piling up, choose a Mercury hora. If you want to talk money with someone, try a Venus hora, keeping in mind that Venus turns retrograde on 3 October and tradition prefers review over launch after that. If you have a hard physical job, Mars.
Then keep a short record for a week. Write the hour, the planet, the task and how it went in one line. After seven days you will know something more useful than any table: whether this way of dividing your day actually helps you focus, or whether it just adds a step. If it is only decoration, drop it without guilt. If it gets you started, that is a real result, whatever the cause.
Planetary hours are worth learning for the mechanism, even if you never plan a day by them. The hours are a twelfth of real daylight, so they stretch and shrink with the seasons and with your latitude. The order of the planets is a genuine ranking by how fast each one appears to move against the stars. Questions people ask
Do I really need my own city's sunrise, or is a national table fine?
You need your own. Sunrise and sunset shift with longitude and, more sharply, with latitude and season. A city a few hundred kilometres north can have daylight that differs by half an hour in September, and that difference is divided across twelve hours, so every hora boundary moves. A table computed for another place will drift steadily wrong across the day. Any tool worth using asks for your location and date and recomputes both endpoints from an ephemeris rather than assuming a 6 a.m. sunrise.
What happens to planetary hours near the poles?
The system quietly breaks. Above the Arctic Circle there are stretches with no sunset and stretches with no sunrise, so there is nothing to divide by twelve. Even at latitudes like Stockholm or Anchorage the summer night hours become so short, sometimes only a few minutes each, that the scheme stops being practical. Traditional practice grew up in subtropical latitudes where daylight varies far less. Some modern users switch to plain sixty minute hours in those months. That is a workaround, not an ancient rule, and it is fair to say so.
Should I use hora or choghadiya?
They are the same principle at different resolution, so use whichever fits how you actually plan. Choghadiya gives eight blocks of about ninety minutes and simple good, neutral or avoid labels, which suits quick decisions like when to set off on a drive. Hora gives twelve finer blocks each tied to one planet, which suits matching a task to a planet. Many households in India check choghadiya without ever using hora. Mixing both on one day usually just produces confusion, because their boundaries do not line up.
If an hour is called inauspicious, should I postpone something important?
No, not on that basis alone. There is no evidence that these labels predict outcomes, and delaying real work such as a medical appointment, a legal deadline or a payment can cause actual harm. The reasonable use is softer: when you already have freedom to choose, use the hour to pick a start time and get moving. If a label makes you anxious rather than organised, the system is costing you more than it gives, and you should stop using it.
