Rahu and Ketu are not planets, and that is the whole point

Every other body in a Vedic chart is a thing you could photograph. The lunar nodes are not. They are two crossing points in space, and eclipses can only happen near them. Start with that fact and the traditional symbolism suddenly makes sense.

Two circles crossing, and nothing there to see

From Earth, the Sun appears to travel along one fixed line through the stars over the course of a year. That line is called the ecliptic, and it is really the plane of Earth's orbit seen from the inside.

The Moon also circles Earth, but its orbit is tilted by about five degrees to that plane. So you have two circles on the sky, slightly tilted against each other. Any two tilted circles cross at exactly two points, and those two points sit directly opposite one another.

Those crossings are the lunar nodes. Where the Moon climbs north across the Sun's path, Vedic astrology places Rahu, the north node. Where it drops south again, half an orbit later, sits Ketu, the south node. Because they are the two ends of one line, Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart. That is not a rule someone invented. It is just what a straight line does.

Here is the part that surprises most people. There is no object at either point. No rock, no gas, no light, no mass. You could point the best telescope in the world at Rahu and see whatever stars happen to be behind it. Vedic tradition is honest about this and calls the pair chhaya grahas, shadow planets. They are treated like planets in a chart because of what happens at their location, not because anything lives there. An address, not a resident.

Why eclipses only happen at these two spots

Every month the Moon lines up with the Sun in longitude, and that is the new moon. Every month it also stands opposite, and that is the full moon. If the two orbits were in the same plane, we would get a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse every single month.

We do not, because of that five degree tilt. At most new moons the Moon passes above or below the Sun, missing it. At most full moons it passes above or below Earth's shadow. The alignment is good in two dimensions and wrong in the third.

The only places where the Moon is exactly on the Sun's plane are the two nodes. So an eclipse needs two conditions at once: a new or full moon, and that moon happening close to Rahu or Ketu. This is why the nodes are called the eclipse points. The word eclipse is really a statement about geometry.

Our ephemeris shows one eclipse in the coming weeks: a partial lunar eclipse on August 28, 2026, with the Moon in Aquarius. Partial is the tell. Earth's shadow clipped the Moon rather than swallowing it, which means the full moon fell near a node but not right on it. And because that eclipse happened with the Moon in Aquarius and the Sun opposite it, you can read off where the nodal axis was sitting: close to the Leo and Aquarius line.

Compare the next two lunations. The new moon in Leo on September 11 and the full moon in Pisces on September 26 pass without eclipses, because by then the Sun and Moon have moved off the crossing points.

They move backwards, and they are slow

The nodes do not sit still. The Sun's gravity tugs steadily on the Moon's orbit, which makes the whole tilted plane slowly rotate. As it turns, the two crossing points slide backwards along the zodiac, against the direction the planets normally travel.

The rate is about 19.3 degrees per year. That gives a full circuit of roughly 18.6 years. Divide it up and Rahu spends around 18 months in each sign, dragging Ketu through the opposite sign at the same time. It also means the eclipse axis migrates. Eclipse seasons arrive about every 173 days, and each year they fall a little earlier and in different signs.

This constant backwards drift is why texts describe Rahu and Ketu as always retrograde. For most planets, retrograde motion is an appearance created by Earth overtaking them. For the nodes it is real, continuous and never stops.

One practical result: the nodes almost never show up in a short-term list of sign changes. Between August 25 and October 9, 2026, the moving parts are all faster bodies. Venus enters Libra on September 2, Mercury enters Virgo on September 7, the Sun enters Virgo on September 17, Mars enters Cancer on September 18, Mercury moves on to Libra on September 26, and Venus turns retrograde in Libra on October 3. The nodes just grind along in the background.

The 18.6 year cycle also explains why the nodes return to their birth position around ages 18 or 19, 37, and 55, and reach the halfway point near ages 9, 28 and 46. Those are arithmetic facts about your birth chart, whatever meaning you decide to give them.

What a crossing point can honestly be said to mean

Now the interpretation, and I want to be careful about where fact ends.

The node is a doorway rather than a place. It is where the Moon leaves one half of the sky for the other, and the only place where the two lights can block each other. So the tradition reads the Rahu and Ketu axis as the part of a chart where light gets covered and then comes back. Appetite, blind spots, sudden exposure, things that grow in the dark. Rahu is described as swallowing without being satisfied, since it has no body. Ketu is the tail end, cut loose, uninterested in more.

The old story says a demon called Svarbhanu was cut in two after stealing the nectar of immortality, and the head and tail still chase the Sun and Moon in revenge. It is a vivid way to remember which end is which. It is a story, not evidence.

And this is the honest limit. The geometry is exact and testable. The symbolism is an analogy that human beings chose, and it has never been shown in controlled studies that the nodes shape anyone's life. Nothing is physically emitted from an empty crossing point. If a reading of your nodal axis is useful, it is useful as a mirror and a prompt for thought, not as a force acting on you.

While we are here: a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with your eyes. A solar eclipse is not, ever, without proper certified filters. The customs around fasting or staying indoors during eclipses are tradition, and worth respecting if they mean something to you, but they have not been tested.

How the axis actually shows up in a chart

Because Rahu and Ketu are two ends of one line, they always occupy opposite signs and opposite houses. You never get one without the other. So reading them means reading a pair, a tension between two areas of life rather than a single placement.

The usual approach treats the Rahu side as unfamiliar ground that pulls at you anyway, and the Ketu side as territory you already know so well that you can be careless with it. Someone with Ketu in a sign of comfort and Rahu in a sign of exposure often finds the exposed side both awkward and magnetic. That is a workable reading, and it is not a prediction.

A few technical points that surprise newcomers. Classical texts do not give Rahu or Ketu rulership of any sign, so the usual talk of dignity and debilitation applies to them only loosely and with disagreement between schools. They do get nakshatra lordships: Rahu rules Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha, and Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula. In the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a life into planetary periods, Rahu gets 18 years and Ketu gets 7.

If you want to see your own axis rather than read about the idea, compute your free Kundli and look for the two glyphs sitting exactly opposite each other. Then read the twelve sign profiles for the two signs they land in, since the sign colours the whole reading. The house positions matter just as much, and a chart tool will show both at once.

Mean node or true node, and why two charts can disagree

Here is a wrinkle worth knowing, because it explains why your node placement sometimes differs between two apps.

The Moon's orbital plane does not rotate smoothly. The Sun keeps pulling on it, so the real crossing point wobbles slightly forward and back around its average position. Astronomers can describe this two ways. The mean node is the smoothed average, moving at a perfectly steady backwards rate. The true node is the actual instantaneous crossing, wobble included, and it occasionally even creeps forward for short stretches.

The gap between the two is small, up to roughly one and a half degrees. Small, but not always harmless. A degree and a half is enough to push Rahu across a nakshatra boundary, and since Vimshottari dasha periods are calculated from the Moon's nakshatra rather than Rahu's, the direct effect there is limited. But it can change which nakshatra lord you assign to Rahu, and it can move the node from one sign to the next if it sits near a cusp.

We compute from the Swiss Ephemeris, which is the same source most serious software uses, and it supplies both values. Any tool you trust should be willing to tell you which one it is showing. Neither choice is wrong. The mean node has the longer traditional pedigree in Indian astrology, while the true node is closer to where the crossing physically is at that moment. Practitioners argue about it, sometimes heatedly, and no test has settled the matter.

Watching the mechanism in the next few weeks

If you want to feel the geometry rather than take my word for it, the coming weeks give you something to watch.

The partial lunar eclipse on August 28, 2026, is the demonstration. The Moon is full and in Aquarius, and it is also near a node, which is the only reason Earth's shadow can reach it at all. Watch how much of the disc gets shaded. Because this one is partial, you are literally seeing the size of the miss, the small gap between the full moon and the exact crossing point.

Then watch what does not happen. The Moon runs through Pisces on August 30 and 31, Aries on September 1 and 2, and on around the circle, reaching Aquarius again on September 24 and 25. The new moon in Leo on September 11 and the full moon in Pisces on September 26 both come and go with no eclipse, because the Sun and Moon are no longer close enough to the nodal line.

One more thing worth separating out. Venus turns retrograde in Libra on October 3. That has nothing to do with the nodes. It is Earth overtaking Venus on the inside track, an appearance created by our own motion. People often lump eclipses and retrogrades together as one vague category of cosmic trouble. They are different mechanisms entirely, and knowing which is which is most of what separates informed interest from superstition.

Rahu and Ketu are the two places where the Moon's tilted path crosses the Sun's, and that single fact explains almost everything about them: why they are always opposite each other, why they drift backwards on an 18.6 year cycle, why they have no physical body, and why eclipses can only ever happen near them. The symbolism of appetite, blind spots and letting go grew out of that geometry, and it is genuinely elegant. It is also an interpretation that people chose, not a force anyone has measured. Learn the astronomy first. Then the mythology becomes interesting instead of frightening, and you can decide for yourself how much weight the reading deserves.

Questions people ask

Is Rahu bad and Ketu worse?

No, and the fear around them says more about how the texts were transmitted than about the sky. Classical writing does use harsh language for the nodes, partly because eclipses were once read as attacks on the Sun and Moon. But an empty crossing point cannot do anything to you, and there is no evidence that people born with any particular nodal placement fare worse in life. Most modern practitioners read the axis as a description of where your attention runs hot and where it runs cold. If an astrologer tells you a Rahu placement dooms something, they are overstating what anyone actually knows.

Why is my Rahu in a different sign from my Western North Node?

Because the two systems measure from different starting points. Western astrology mostly uses the tropical zodiac, which begins at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed against the stars. The two have slowly drifted apart and now differ by roughly 24 degrees, an offset called the ayanamsha. So the same physical node gets a different sign name in each system. The node itself is in one place. The labels differ, and that is a measurement convention rather than a disagreement about the sky.

Should I avoid making decisions during an eclipse, like the one on August 28?

That is your call, and I would not dress up custom as fact. Many families have real traditions around eclipses, including fasting, chanting or not starting new work, and there is nothing wrong with keeping them. What I can say is that no controlled study shows eclipses affect decisions or outcomes. Practically, the August 28, 2026 partial lunar eclipse in Aquarius is a nice thing to go outside and look at. Safe with bare eyes, unlike a solar eclipse, which needs certified filters without exception.

Do the nodes ever change direction, or are they always retrograde?

The mean node, the smoothed average, always moves backwards at a steady rate and never turns. The true node, which tracks the actual wobbling crossing point, can briefly creep forward for short stretches before resuming its backwards drift. So the answer depends on which node your software is showing. Either way the long-term direction is backwards, completing a circuit in about 18.6 years, and a good chart tool should tell you which version it used.
