Meaning

Under an eclipsed moon, a figure in a red cloak turns his back on eight carefully stacked cups and picks his way up a rocky watercourse toward the mountains. The Eight of Cups is the honest departure: leaving something that works but no longer means anything, with no villain to blame and no applause on exit.

This is one of the deck's hard, dignified cards. The cups aren't broken — that's what makes leaving so difficult and so necessary.
